Josh Tovey from Ohio Lt Governor Jon Husted’s office stopped by our AtWork Personnel office to meet with several employers about TechCred. A new application window opened January 2, 2020 and will extend through the end of January. TechCred is for ANY employer – especially targeting manufacturers – to help build technical talent by reimbursing the costs of employee training that leads to recognized technical credentials.
The program pays for up to $2,000 per credential with a company eligible for up to $30,000 in each funding round. The list of approved credentials is extensive. Cathy Metcalf from NIMS noted that several of their credentials are included. There is also a process to request approval for credentials that are not on the list. In fact, Josh noted that employer requests have been very helpful in making sure the most current and relevant credentials are approved.

Employers asked great questions, and there are some limitations to the program. Funds can only be used for training and testing that is publicly offered; so, in house training programs are not eligible unless they are in partnership with a public provider. Individual worker names and their credentials must be submitted rather than estimated counts or anticipated hires. Applications can only be submitted by employers, so there is no route for an individual to access the funding except through their employer. Employers can submit additional credentials for the same worker in future funding rounds.
Josh encouraged companies to submit early and take full advantage of each funding round until the funds are consumed. Find out more about TechCred here.
